Common Issues in Practical Operation of Ultrasonic Coating Thickness Gauges​

The ultrasonic Coating Thickness Gauge is a widely used tool, with the advantage of non-destructive measurement of coating thickness. However, to obtain accurate data, users need to know what factors can affect the accuracy? These factors are also applicable to pipe thickness tester and UT thickness tester, as their core is ultrasonic technology.

Improper probe contact is the first important factor: either the pressure is too strong or the pressure is unevenly applied. For example, for pipe thickness tester, the pipe surface is curved, making it more difficult to stabilize the probe, and the error will be more obvious. At this time, a curved probe adapter needs to be used to solve the contact problem.

Environmental factors can also interfere with the measurement. There are dirt on the surface: if the substrate surface is stained with dust or oil, the sound wave will be blocked and the measurement will be inaccurate. Therefore, before measuring, clean the surface first to allow the probe to directly contact the clean substrate. Extreme temperature: pipe thickness testers are sensitive to temperature. If the environmental temperature is below 0℃ or above 50℃, the sensitivity of the sensor will decrease, and it is necessary to preheat or cool to a stable temperature before measuring.

In addition, incorrect setting of the sound velocity leads to inaccurate measurement: the ultrasonic Coating Thickness Tester needs to adjust the speed differently for different coatings. Finally, the sound wave will be reflected when it encounters edges or holes, disrupting the original measurement signal, resulting in inaccurate values. The solution is simple: keep the measurement point at least 20 millimeters away from the edge, and you can avoid the interference of reflection.

The measured two-way transit time is divided by two to account for the downand-back travel path, and then multiplied by the velocity of sound in the material.
